New opportunities for teenagers to build skills for life.

Lewisham teens are learning valuable skills through the opening of a new Explorer Scout Unit at The Lewisham Islamic Centre.

Since opening, Muhsineen Explorer Scout Unit (boys and girls aged 14 to 17) have been taking part in activities and adventures, encouraged to ask the bigger questions, think on their feet, be part of a team, and always have a plan B up their sleeves.

The young people get the opportunity to decide what activities they want to do and get involved with the planning. They are boosting their confidence in addition to navigation, leadership, teamwork, and employability skills.

The teenagers are determined to achieve their Chief Scout’s Platinum Award. They are taking part in a variety of challenges. These include six nights away, learning new skills, taking up new physical activities, providing service to their community, and completing an expedition. At a recent large camp, they were responsible for the kitchen and have enjoyed passing on their knowledge to younger members at the 1st Lewisham Park Scout Group.

‘’We get to meet up with friends every week, having fun, working in a team, and taking on new challenges.’’.

Explorer Scout, Safa said she loved being part of the new unit.

The team is looking forward to continuing to support their local community, taking part in expeditions, connecting with nature whilst camping, and completing a variety of badges including the Media Relations and Marketing Badge.

‘’Explorer Scouts is one of the highlights of my week. Scouting is more than just having fun. Scouts learn skills that are essential to their personal development and reaching their full potential. Scouting is also fun for adult volunteers as well. Volunteering’s not just about giving back, it goes both ways. It improves your wellbeing, gives you skills for the future, and helps you make new friends.’’
