Frylands Challenge Camp 2026
This camp took place on 25–27 September 2026. Read how the weekend went.
Lewisham District Scouts are back at Frylands Wood for a weekend of challenges, camping and a District get-together. It is an opportunity for Scouts from across the District to meet and mix, and for leaders to work alongside people from other Groups.
When and where
Friday 25 to Sunday 27 September 2026

Who it is for
A Scout camp, for 10 to 14 year olds, open to every Group in the District. Explorers are welcome to come and help — running a base or taking on the wide game is real leadership experience.
The weekend
Arrive from 6pm on Friday, or between 8.30 and 9.00 on Saturday. Leave Saturday evening, Sunday morning or Sunday lunchtime. Saturday stands on its own, so coming just for the day is fine.
- Saturday — teams rotating round challenge bases centred on Farleigh Field. Campcraft, survival skills, teamwork, problem solving and archery. Teams score themselves as they go.
- Saturday evening — barbecue, then a wide game, and a campfire if fires are allowed.
- Sunday — Groups programme their own morning.
Small Troops can combine to make up a team. The full running order goes to Group Leaders nearer the time.
Cost
£15 per Scout, camping or day only. That covers Saturday’s activities and materials, the barbecue, and camping if you stay. Explorers helping and leaders are free. Groups are invoiced after the event.
Food and transport are on top and vary by Group, so your own Group will confirm the final figure.
Food
Groups cater for themselves across the weekend, apart from the Saturday barbecue which we run centrally. Numbers, dietary requirements and allergies are collected on the booking form. Where a young person has a severe allergy, their own Group makes the arrangements, since they know their members and hold the medication.
Cooking is on gas.
Access and additional needs
If a young person needs something adjusted to take part, let us know and we will work it out with you. The earlier we know, the more we can do.
For Group Leaders
Bases. Each Group is asked to bring one or more bases, running 30 to 45 minutes. Some can be self-led by the teams themselves; others need a leader with them. Campcraft and survival bases are what we are short of — knife and axe, fire building, shelters, cooking challenges, pioneering.
Nights away. One central Nights Away Notification covers the event. If your Group has no permit holder, camp alongside a Group that has and they will help you out overnight.
Risk assessment. There is a central risk assessment to review, and to add to for anything specific to your Group or your base.
InTouch. Each Group holds InTouch for its own young people and their parents and guardians. For anything on the day, tell the site and the event lead as well.
